Department of Consumer Affairs has proposed an amendment in the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. The reason for proposed change is stated as to establish uniformity for packaged commodities in the wake of the evolving market across both offline and online channels as the packaged commodities above 25 kg are also available in the market for retail sale. The following proposed amendment is as under: As we can see, the earlier rule specified category of persons to whom the provisions of this chapter shall not apply. However, the new rule says that the provisions of this chapter shall apply to all packaged commodities sold in bags in retail. This marks a paradigm shift in applicability of this chapter. If this proposed amendment goes through, then all packaged commodities which were earlier exempt because they were not.......
